The Good Fight: How (not) to get Religious Freedom
Please join Tchipakkan and her guest Kerensa on CTCW’s Otherworldly on Zoom this Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, at 8 PM Eastern time.
My guest this week is an old SCA friend, artist, scholar in many fields, polymath, and old grumpy man. He grew up pagan, and he’s been in the magickal community for over 50 years. Unsurprisingly, as an authentic curmudgeon has seen enough stuff to develop some powerful attitudes about folks who represent themselves as typical of the pagan community.
Freedom of Religion is the theory, but some pagans (I used to be one, blush) say that everyone needs to “come out of the Broom Closet”. While that’s a great if it were true, but that’s not how works in fact. People can lose their jobs, or the custody of their children simply because others know that they are witches or pagans. Those who assume that “America is a Christian nation”, often don’t realize it if their friends are pagan. Because their get their ideas of what witches are like from Hollywood, or media who are actively searching for the most interesting ‘sound bite’ to use to attract more viewers. “Normal” pagans pass unnoticed, totally missed. Heathens have been trying to disassociate themselves from Nazis since the White Supremacy movement discovered runes (The Joy of Viking!) Not everyone is eager for the spotlight, but are you satisfied with the way we are portrayed in media or by the ones who speak for us? (me, for example?) How did we get such a ‘bad rap’ anyway?
Let’s talk about the best way to promote a positive image of ourselves to our mainstream neighbors without causing problems for innocent. In the last decade, we have pulled back from training young people, to avoid accusations of proselytizing, or trying to convert minors, leaving them to learn from the seriously unregulated internet. How can we help new and enthusiastic ‘baby’ pagans from making us look foolish? How do we avoid alienating potential allies? Let’s take an honest look at the best way to promote positive interfaith interaction? Please join us. We want to hear from all points of view.

People are psychic, magick is real, ghosts and other spirits exist, and people can heal with energy. Each culture around the world had come up with ways to explore these realities, and that’s great, we can learn from each other, that’s how we change the world.
The Changing Times-Changing Worlds Conference is a conference for learning about magick, psychic abilities, spiritual practices, divination, healing modalities, folklore, and similar skills. This year it’s happening November 1-3, at the Courtyard by Marriott, in Cromwell, CT. (Early Bird Registration opening soon, see our website.
Since we enjoy such topics all year, every Wednesday, we have the Otherworldly show, featuring many of our speakers, and similar topics. We hope you can join us Wednesday at 8. If you miss this show, the recordings are posted on Youtube Thursday or Friday.
