Faye Ringle and the Restless Dead of New England
Please join Tchipakkan and her guest Faye Ringel on CTCW’s Otherworldly on Zoom this Wednesday, May 8th, 2024, at 8 PM Eastern time.
My guest this week is Faye Ringel who spoke at an early CTCW. She mentions that while she’s often called to speak to historical groups, she’s rarely asked to return, as the subjects she brings up are disturbing. The Gothic Literature she studies brings to the surface religious intolerance, racism and misogyny, inherent in this literary genre (and population?), and how these nightmares continue to haunt literature and popular culture in films, television and more. She also wrote an article on in the Journal of American Culture: New England Neo-Pagans: Medievalism, Fantasy, & Religion in 1992.
This week we’ll be talking about Faye’s new book: The Gothic Literature and History of New England: Secrets of the Restless Dead. While speaking of literature doesn’t necessarily inform us of real ghosts, vampires, and other supernatural activities in the history of New England, it is intimately related to and expressive of the New England psyche, and can inform us of how we got to where our attitudes came from, and where they are going. From Cotton Mather to H.P. Lovecraft to Stephen King, from the witch trials to the Black Lives Matter Movement, this is the heart of the folklore of New England, the path that lead to a fear of the natural world, and toward our modern disassociation with it. Her previous book was New England’s Gothic Literature: History and Folklore of the Supernatural from the 17th through the 20th centuries.

People are psychic, magick is real, ghosts and other spirits exist, and people can heal with energy. Each culture around the world had come up with ways to explore these realities, and that’s great, we can learn from each other, that’s how we change the world.
The Changing Times-Changing Worlds Conference is a conference for learning about magick, psychic abilities, spiritual practices, divination, healing modalities, folklore, and similar skills. This year it’s happening November 1-3, at the Courtyard by Marriott, in Cromwell, CT. (Early Bird Registration opening soon, see our website. https://ctcw.net/ )
Since we enjoy such topics all year, every Wednesday, we have the Otherworldly show, featuring many of our speakers, and similar topics. We hope you can join us Wednesday at 8. If you miss this show, the recordings are posted on Youtube Thursday or Friday.
