The Evolution of Halloween
This week on Otherworldly, Wednesday, October 19th at 8 PM Eastern Time when Tchipakkan, Robin Kanstein and Jo Lynx will discuss how the holiday has been transform from All Hallows Day to how modern America celebrates Halloween.
At this point Halloween comes only second to Christmas in spending in America, it is projected that we will spend over 10.14 billion dollars (last year’s total) on costumes, candy and decorations. Witches and many pagans celebrate the holiday as Samhain, a Celtic harvest festival; while Catholics celebrate All Hallow’s Eve, the evening before All Saints Day. But where did the customs: bonfires, bobbing for apples, carving faces in vegetables, telling ghost stories, doing divination, and wearing costumes come from? Did Tricking come before treating? Do you hold a dumb supper for your ancestors? Are there special foods you associate with Halloween, or is it a simply secular holiday for you? Let’s try to trace the origins of how we celebrate, and more importantly, consider whether it matters, and how we feel we should celebrate this holiday. (If you have your costume already, feel free to wear it during the meeting!)
