Importance of Ancestors with AVee Baron

Posted on Updated on

Please join Tchipakkan and her guest AVee Baron on the New Normal 8 pm Wednesday, October 4, 2017, 8-9 p.m. edt.

If you missed the live show, it’s archived here: http://tobtr.com/s/10314023

We’ll be talking about Ancestors. Most cultures have some version of ancestor veneration, where the spirits of their beloved dead aid them in their lives. Even modern folk sometimes feel in touch with our relatives. Mediums and Spiritualists assure us that they watch over us and tweak reality to help us as they can. As with most forms of mind-to-mind (soul-to-soul) contact, frequent interaction makes it easier to communicate. Rituals, offerings, keeping an altar all help, and this time of year (approaching Samhain/Halloween) is one where many feel closest to their ancestors.

This year at the Changing Times-Changing Worlds conference, my guest AVee Baron will be running an Ancestor Ritual (as well as teaching Cartomancy).

Veronica Cummer Hedgewitch Craft

Posted on Updated on

Please join Tchipakkan and Veronica Cummer on the New Normal Podast 8 pm Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 8-9 p.m. edt.

This week I get to talk with Veronica Cummer, author of two books on Sorgitzak- Old Forest Craft & Dancing the Blood, Masks of the Muse, and To Fly By Night-The Craft of the Hedgewitch. While I hope we will also get to muses, and Sorgitzak, tonight I’m hoping to hear more about hedgecraft. This sort of witchcraft seems very close to shamanic practice, as she has said, the hedge represents the barrier between this and the other world(s), and the witch flies over it in the course of her work. This should be of interest both to those of the witch and shaman sort.

Feel free to call with questions and to join the conversation: 619-639-4606
If you have a question about The Muse, or Sorgitzak, we’ll be happy to talk about those too.

Veronica Cummer has been a witch for 20 years, more if you count growing up on a farm in rural Iowa, running wild in the woods, conjuring up storms, and turning pig’s teeth into magickal talismans.

After moving to Minnesota, she was a staff writer and artist for several years for the now-retired Twin Cities magazine, Pagan Ink. Her work has more recently appeared in NewWitch, The Beltane Papers, The Crooked Path Journal, and the anthologies, “Talking About the Elephant-An Anthology of Neopagan Perspectives on Cultural Appropriation,” (Megalithica)and “Datura” (Scarlet Imprint 2010).

We’d love you to phone in with questions: 619-639-4606 (live only). If you know you’re going to listen later but have a question, look on the facebook events page and leave a question there. We’ll try to answer it during the show.

Appreciating the Crone

Posted on Updated on

Please join Tchipakkan on the New Normal 8 pm Wednesday, January 18, 2017, 8-9 p.m. edt.

If you missed the live show- the archive is here.

Remember the exchange: “Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?”

“Witches are old and ugly!” responds Dorothy.

Women are said to go through three stages: Maiden, Mother and Crone. Let’s face it, not many of us are eager to embrace that third stage. We don’t have a better word for Old Woman: Hag, gorgon, harpy, fury, harridan, witch, biddy… beldam is the best the thesaurus was able to provide.

The image of the old witch, while it does carry an aura of power, knowledge, and wisdom, also includes significant baggage of frustration, infirmity, and ugliness along with implications of jealousy and bitterness. Many of these do NOT have counterparts in the image of elder males. In folklore the Crone is linked with death and change- Baba Yaga is described in similar terms to corpses. In modern fairy tales, before the beautiful enchantress does anything evil she becomes old and ugly.

What a pity that we should still be bound by such mental fetters when we are able to accept so many other things we’ve come to understand are just other ways of living in the world!

In honor of the Women’s March, I thought we could look at how we see women, where these archetypes come from, and what we can do to change them- first within ourselves, and then for the rest of the world.

Speaker on New Normal: Sheri Ann Cook

Posted on Updated on

Sheri Ann Cook You’d better grab yourself a snack for this one… Tchipakkan’s Guest on the New Normal on Wednesday is Sheri Ann Cook, and we “kitchen witches” will be talking about food! There is nothing we all do more often than eat (even more than we sleep), and what we consume makes a sacred connection between humans and the planet.

Sheri will be doing a workshop at Changing Times-Changing Worlds on Ritual Baking, and we’ll be talking about how to make your kitchen a magickal place, how to make your food work for you, what’s she’s been up to recently and what’s on the menu as we move into the cold dark of the year.

I know you cook! Do you cast spells? Do you know that many of the ingredients in your kitchen like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves are powerful magical SAC cookies augingredients? So is your parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme! (and other ingredients from milk to meat to pasta!) We may even share some special recipes!
